Instructor & Training Manager Competencies

My previous position was created by my supervisor to fulfill a need, and there were not any actual standards that she used to create my job description.  However, I believe the professional standards of the International Board of Standards for Training, the Instructor Competencies, most appropriately define me as a professional at this time. A requirement of my position was to communicate the needs of the teachers to our administrative staff in both written and verbal form.  I was also required to stay abreast of the current technologies and stay updated on those technologies that we currently used, and to do this I attended trainings and performed research when necessary.  These are aspects of the IBSTPI Professional Foundation's standard that I have had to uphold.

I have had to perform the Planning and Preparation standard most often.  I conducted staff developments and other trainings were I created all documentation and presentations.  I have also helped my supervisor create instructional material for her own staff developments.  I created my own instructional guide for an assessment program that we used on the campus.   I met the Instructional Methods and Strategies standard by using hands on training to help engage the teachers so they could better understand and enjoy the software they were learning to use.  When I am training my main goal is that the teachers will be able to use the software immediately after our training, and one way I make sure of this is to always ask for questions and feedback during the training to make sure that they understand what we are doing.

To meet the requirements of the Assessment and Evaluation standard, teachers were given a performance survey to fill out after each training session.  I also consulted regularly with my supervisor and department chairs about my performance and the performance of other teachers.  The last standard, Management, was met with the organization of my office space.  My office was setup up in a large room that housed my work area, the assessment work area and a free work space.  This configuration allowed for refresher training on the assessment software whenever needed and it allowed me to be readily available if any problems arose.

In the next five to ten years I hope to have started my own instructional technology consulting firm.  This venture will change my standard association from that of the instructor to that of the training manager under IBSTPI.  This set of standards is considerably different from my current standards.  The Professional Foundations standard will require that I continue to communicate effectively, comply with legal and ethical standards, and improve my professional skills.  It also requires that I maintain the organizations’ networks to promote and support training.

The Planning and Analysis standard requires that I work with strategic planning, use performance analysis to improve the organization and plan organizational change.  These substandards are honestly ones that I am not very familiar with and I know I will have to work hard to accomplish them.  The training manager Design and Development standard is a combination of the Instructional Methods and Strategies standard and the Assessment and Evaluation standard of the instructor.  The one difference is the requirement to apply instructional system design principles to training projects.  The last standard, Administration, encompasses the aspects of a leadership role.  I have not been in an administrative position, but I have had to conduct myself in the manner of a leader while performing training.  The other substandards: applying management skills to the training function, applying business skills to the training function, and implementing knowledge management solutions are areas that I will need to do research and training on.
